Youth Hubz

#YoungLivesMatter

At Youth Hubz, we are one team committed to supporting young people and care leavers to develop the skills and confidence they need to live independently.

We are Youth Hubz

We have developed a great reputation for providing specialised support for young people in 24-7, floating support and Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) accomodation across West Yorkshire.

Our current portfolio contains 20 + small properties acquired to meet the needs of our young people (including two adapted with safety equipment for the young people with hearing impairments) and trainer flats – offered as a transferable tenancy, covered by universal credit and other income benefits – we plan to invest in more similar accommodation.

The maximum occupancy in any of our houses is 5. All properties that require a HMO have one. We have a variety of solo placement types – houses, flats and apartments. All placements are completed to a high specification, beautifully decorated and furnished in a modern way, meeting the required standards.

We pride ourselves that our homes offer a nurturing environment and provide a safe space for our young people to successfully transition into independent living.

Our service is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, including national and public holidays. We provide services during the day and sleep over services.

    Our Mission and Values

    • To provide a safe environment
    • To support and prepare young people for independence
    • To develop and encourage new skills
    • To be honest and transparent
    Our Mission
Our mission is to guide our young people to independence, equipping them with all the skills and confidence they need to lead fulfilling, healthy, happy lives and be a valuable member of our society.
    Our Vision
We want our young people to have a sense of belonging, to feel that they really count – that their voice is heard and they are valued and supported as individuals.
    Our Ethos
Youth Hubz subscribes to a holistic and child-centred approach: providing a warm, nurturing, stable environment that listens and responds appropriately to the views, wishes and aspirations of the young people we support. It is important to us that they feel safe, happy and comfortable to be themselves and aspire to develop, thrive and fulfil their potential.

    Our approach

We have a trauma-informed and person-centred approach to support and encourage young people to co-produce our services from planning activities to defining service agreements or choosing curtain colours, it’s the young person’s voice which drives our practice.
    Gary Barker
    Director
At Youth Hubz we recognise that everybody is unique– everyone has different experiences and different skills.

Key worker sessions will be designed with the young person and their team to meet their specific needs. We will expect young people to engage in a minimum of three key-working sessions per week. All key workers are able to offer advice and support on any issues/problems/queries young people may encounter during their time at Youth Hubz.

Key work sessions present the opportunity to seek advice, discuss, complain or simply talk through feelings.
Our staff team appreciate the importance of knowing their young people really well and understanding their particular needs. They are trained to support the development of life skills so that our young people have every opportunity to achieve positive outcomes: to provide clear and consistent boundaries combined with incentives and rewards for young people's progress and achievements; to help young people understand and regulate their emotions to reduce the number of negative incidents, and manage those that do occur well. Staff are trained to recognise signs of CSE, CCE and victims of Modern Slavery.

Each young person has a support plan which will identify the independent skills that need to be addressed and map progress, providing a focus for direct Key Worker sessions.

Young people are prompted to take responsibility for: their own space; maintaining a clean and organised home; planning, budgeting and shopping for making affordable meals; eating a balanced diet; and doing their laundry. All homes are well equipped with the facilities to accommodate this. Staff aim to make these tasks fun – eg TikTok cooking, come dine with me experiences, bake offs and cultural meals.
Youth Hubz follows the PACE model and all staff are trained to implement this in their everyday methods of working.  PACE is a model of caring which helps staff form secure attachments with young people. Our therapeutic approach to parenting young people encourages them to invest in themselves by creating a positive, safe environment in which to develop the life skills they will need to accompany them into adulthood. Our team are trained to support the development of these skills so that our young people have every opportunity to achieve positive outcomes and go on to lead safe and fulfilling adult lives.

Our support is outward facing: we work in partnership with the young people and the wider system of professionals. Our united aim is to meet their physical, psychological, emotional and health needs.

Youth Hubz have high expectations of their staff to engage in on-going learning to ensure they are able to support the needs of our young people by providing attentive support to meet their emotional, mental and physical health needs as well as reflective practice in order to continually improve our provision. Staff work to foster positive, trusting, open relationships which encourage young people to share and discuss any concerns or worries that they have about their well-being or safety. .

The environment created within our properties is established to promote the well-being and safety of ‘Looked After’ young people who have been placed in our independent living provision.

Youth Hubz is fully committed to promoting social inclusion and, as such, we actively encourage young people to engage in a wide range of community activities which further their own interests. We have established links with social groups, youth clubs and sporting clubs to allow young people to continue with their own hobbies and interests.

    Our History

Youth Hubz began in 2019 with the belief that small, homely, high quality provision would provide the best support for young people transitioning from care.
We had one three-bedded property and three members of staff.

We were approached to take the harder-to-place young people with complex needs who required high staffing ratios and multi-agency support. These young people required very specialist interaction from other professional bodies too eg. CAMHS and Forward Leeds an alcohol and drug addiction service. We have had considerable success working co-operatively with a range of providers, seeking out bespoke support for specific needs. Our reputation grew, our beds are in high demand and a niche was created.

Most of our placements were the harder-to-place young people with complex needs who require high staffing ratios and multi-agency support. Individual risk assessments for these young people are in place and shared with staff – with serious incidents identified. Staff are made aware of what actions to follow and who to contact. Risk assessments may identify the need for solo placements, additional staffing (Youth Hubz are flexible in adjusting staffing ratios to meet risk requirements), specialist interaction from other professional bodies, appropriate family contacts/friendships and potential risks to staff, other young people or themselves. LAC assessments help secure a suitable placement.

We specialised in working with young people whose individual needs mean they require a solo or dual placement and additional staffing if required by the local authority.

We have a sister care company and our vision is to offer the promise of stability with a smooth, managed transition from one level of care to another, driven by young people’s aspirations of a tangible future. Knowing from the beginning of the initial placement, that they have a future with us, enables our young people to aspire to live in their own home with prospects of a brighter independence ahead of them and engages them to commit to the process.

Additionally, we have run our own apprenticeship scheme through a second sister company. In order to become one of our apprentices, young people build their own CV, read the job advert and complete an application form to the specification of the advert and attend the interview under formal conditions. Key workers’ direct sessions support this process by modelling a CV, job application and helping young people to identify their strengths.

    The Sister Companies

    April

    Floating Support keyworkers
After leaving school, I worked in the textile industry for over 20 years. To support and encourage my daughter to attend college I completed an access to higher education course, where I had the chance to volunteer at a homeless shelter as part of the curriculum.

My passion for helping others then led me to start working with young people, initially in a mother and baby unit. In 2003, I joined Calderdale Council as a casual residential worker, becoming a permanent staff member in 2007. I then moved to a short break unit for children with learning disabilities in 2011, where I stayed until 2015 before changing my career path to focus more on support than care.

For the next 8 years, I had the privilege of supporting 16-18 year old care leavers, and I was even promoted to manager in 2018. It was a very rewarding experience, but I was eager for a new challenge when the opportunity to become a team leader working with Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) became available. I'm really enjoying the new experiences and the chance to support these young people as they navigate the asylum process and work towards living independently developing skills for community safety and involvement, personal hygiene, and basis English.

Outside of work, I cherish my time with my children and grandchildren. It brings me great joy to be able to spend quality time with my loved ones.
